KOCHI: The Kochi Metro Rail, a long-cherished dream of Kochiites, will become a reality with the project expected to be commissioned in three years as promised by special adviser to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) E Sreedharan. With decks cleared for the project, Kochiites will soon be able to escape the congested roads and road blocks. The government on Thursday decided to entrust the work with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

However, the only hurdle that remains now is Central clearance. Welcoming the State Government’s decision to implement the project at the earliest, Kochi Mayor Tony Chammany said the Metro Rail would be a great relief to the public.

“It is a great pleasure to know that hurdles have been cleared for the Kochi Metro. We also appreciate the government’s commitment towards implementing the project,” he said and added that all controversies related to the project had been laid to rest.
Once the world-class Metro Rail system becomes a reality, it would enhance the quality of life of Kochiites by improving regional connections and reducing overcrowding, traffic congestions and commuting time.

Moreover, these trains are also eco-friendly and reduce noise and air pollution. DMRC project director P Sriram expressed the view that the Metro Rail would be a great relief to the people who live both in the city and the suburbs.

“Everything has been cleared and we have to restart the strategies. We have to go ahead with the work that had been put on hold,” he said .
The `5,000-crore Kochi Metro Rail Project, which had been facing roadblocks right from the beginning, will have a length of 27 km with 26 stations and would run between Aluva and Tripunithura.
